Classical & Literary Chinese Individualized Instruction Program

This program pairs each learner of classical or literary Chinese(文言文, 古文)with an online instructor from the learner’s own field, and tailors the curriculum to the individual’s specific reasons for learning the language. A learner who is a historian would be paired with a historian as instructor, a Confucian studies scholar with a Confucian studies scholar, a literature scholar with a literature scholar, etc.

The schedule and length of study would be determined through consultation between the learner, instructor, and program coordinator, and will aim to fit the learner’s overall situation. This model avoids spending time on knowledge and texts not pertinent to the learner’s immediate needs. Vocabulary will be heavily drawn from the primary sources the learner intends to read.

The corpus of classical & literary Chinese texts is vast and spans many genres. Gaining proficiency in the language through extensive personal instruction tends to be costly. With affordability for students and scholars in mind, the curriculum will aim towards attaining self-learning capacity quickly.
